4 who died after Pinkfish concert believed to have taken ecstasy, say cops

PETALING JAYA: The four people who died after attending the Pinkfish countdown event at Sunway Lagoon on Dec 31 are suspected to have taken ecstasy, police say.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said they are still awaiting the toxicology analysis report for confirmation.

Hussein said the four who died were among seven people admitted to Hospital Kuala Lumpur and University Malaya Medical Centre after showing the same symptoms.

He said the seven did not attend the concert together but were present separately with friends and family members. He said two patients are still being treated and one has been discharged.

“From our preliminary investigation, it was found that all four people (who died) attended the Pinkfish concert at Sunway Lagoon on the night of the incident and are believed to have taken ecstasy pills,” he said in a statement.

“Police have recorded statements from six witnesses, and several others will be called to assist in the investigation, including the concert organisers and the victims’ friends.”

He said police have opened four sudden death investigation papers but are still working to determine if there was any criminal element involved, including whether they had been poisoned.

Earlier today, Pinkfish’s management said the four had died outside the event’s premises.

The event organisers said the safety of attendees and other stakeholders had always been their highest priority in holding the countdown concert.

The management said it had taken precautionary measures for the event, including having more than 100 policemen present as well as security personnel and K9 units at entry points.

It said it would fully cooperate with the authorities in their investigation into the deaths.
