Bersatu division slams last-minute postponement of meeting, hints at ‘mass exit’

PETALING JAYA: A grassroots leader from Shah Alam Bersatu has slammed the party’s last-minute decision to postpone the division’s annual meeting scheduled for this afternoon, which was to elect the new leadership for the 2025-2027 term.

Anuar Giman, head of Kampung Kebun Bunga Bersatu, said the cancellation notice issued late last night by party secretary-general Azmin Ali cited an ongoing disciplinary investigation over a commotion during the Nov 2 party elections.

According to the notice, the investigation involves candidates in the Shah Alam division.

However, Anuar claimed that the postponement was politically motivated to help a losing candidate backed by a Bersatu assemblyman.

He voiced frustration over the late notice, saying that significant preparation had already been made.

“Why was the party only notifying us just hours before the conference, why not two or three days before?

“We feel disrespected after putting in so much effort to organise this conference. All preparations, including the venue, food, and informing delegates, were already made,” he told FMT.

Despite the postponement, he said, they would still attend the conference at Dewan Lavender in Section 7, Shah Alam, which may turn into a mass exit from the party.

“We’re exhausted by the political games that undermine the members just for the benefit of certain leaders.

“Perhaps we will announce our collective departure from the party, it may even result in the dissolution of the Shah Alam division,” he said.

According to a letter from the Bersatu election committee dated Dec 9, Shah Alam Bersatu was instructed to reconvene its conference today, with a team appointed to manage the elections for the new term.

Ten other divisions were previously unable to hold their elections on Nov 2 after they were suspended.

The suspended divisions were Hulu Langat, Kota Melaka, Tapah, Teluk Intan, Machang, Bukit Mertajam, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Cameron Highlands and Jasin.
