Could artificial general intelligence be here by 2050?

PARIS: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that 2025 could see the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI). This technology is so advanced that it could be able to rival the capabilities of the human brain.

In an interview with the YouTube channel Y Combinator, Sam Altman suggests that 2025 could see the advent of artificial general intelligence, a technology as exciting as it is feared.

Whatever the case, there’s no doubt that the next model used by ChatGPT will take artificial intelligence to a new level, with a tool that comes even closer to human capabilities.

The idea behind artificial general intelligence is that, one day, algorithms will be able to match and even surpass the limits of the human brain.

In fact, the biggest difference between artificial general intelligence and machine learning, as it is used today, lies in the ability to understand and analyse a question or task in the same way as a human could.

Artificial general intelligence therefore refers to systems capable of performing a task with a cognitive approach similar to that of humans.

In absolute terms, this type of intelligence could even one day demonstrate consciousness or even feelings. At present, no technology comes close to achieving this.

This new form of AI could revolutionise many aspects of society. In science, it could speed up research and help develop new medicines.

It could also accelerate the development of robotics, with the emergence of machines capable of working and interacting with humans.

Finally, in the field of art, this new form of intelligence could potentially create quality content, be it literature, painting or music.

However, until further notice, all this remains speculative. Nevertheless, the deployment of this form of intelligence will be worrying if it is not seriously regulated. And progress certainly won’t stop there. The next step could be the emergence of artificial superintelligence, with capabilities far superior to those of human beings!
