The state is one of nine which have suffered flooding. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: More than 100,000 people have been evacuated to relief centres as monsoonal rains caused floods in nine states. Three people have died and 103,226 have been evacuated to 590 temporary relief centers in nine states as of 8pm, according to the National Disaster Command Centre. Kelantan has the most number of flood victims with 69,050, followed by Terengganu (24,540), Kedah (6,000), Negeri Sembilan (2,161), Perlis (496), Selangor (487), Johor (305), Melaka (167) and Perak (20). The irrigation and drainage department said several major rivers in Kelantan rose above danger levels tonight, including Sungai Lanas in Jeli (29.74m) and Sungai Kelantan at Tambatan D’Raja (5.53m). In Kedah, the state water supply corporation temporarily ceased operations at seven water treatment plants after water levels at intake points reached a critical stage due to continuous rainfall over the past few days. Bernama reported that water tankers have been deployed to several areas across Padang Terap, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, and Baling which have been hit by unscheduled water supply disruptions. Airline passengers were left stranded at Alor Setar airport today when the runway was flooded, causing flights to be cancelled. The runway was temporarily closed but the airport terminal remained open. Yesterday, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this year’s floods look set to be the worst in a decade. Malaysia’s worst floods were in 2014, which claimed 21 lives and saw more than 500,000 people evacuated, mainly in Kelantan. News
