Unlock video game rewards by watching second season of ‘Squid Game’

PARIS: The festivities continue as the release of the second season of “Squid Game” approaches. As Netflix multiplies its surprises, the streaming giant has revealed a number of new treats for its subscribers.

While you don’t need to be a paying subscriber of the streaming platform to play the “Squid Game: Unleashed” video game, launched on Dec 17, players who have Netflix accounts will be able to enjoy certain advantages over others, but only under certain conditions.

For example, those who plan to watch all episodes of the show’s second season in one go will earn in-game cash. A special “Binge Watcher” skin will also be awarded.

For those who weren’t planning to binge-watch, the more episodes you watch, the more rewards you’ll earn, although details of these have yet to be revealed.

“[T]he number one way that self-expression happens in ‘Squid Game: Unleashed,’ is by choosing each character and customizing them. So this is a new way to do that, only for people that have watched the show, so it shows your fandom even more,” Bill Jackson, director of the “Squid Game: Unleashed” game told The Hollywood Reporter.

“There’s a lot of conversations about, how do we reinforce each other? How do we take this cool idea that you’re doing in the show and put it in the game?” continues Bill Jackson.

“Or, how do they take something that’s in the game and bring it back to one of the other expressions? […] When people are watching the show, they might think about the game and want to go play it and express it that way.

“Or when they play the game, they might go to the show and or go see the touring experience, or go find some way to express their fandom with merchandise. There’s a lot of different ways you can express fandom.”

Netflix’s new strategy, with its focus on gaming and immersive experiences, promises changes within the “Squid Game: Unleashed” video game.

According to the game’s designer, the American streaming giant is already planning to update the game with new stages in order to hold the player’s attention.

“There are games that will appear in [Squid Game season two] that people have not seen, and some of those games will make it into our game,” Bill Jackson says.

“Some of the things you see in the show will make it into our game after that airs. And that’s another way that we’re kind of building that cross-colonization between the game and the show.”
